Ghoramara: This Indian Island Is Slowly Disappearing Because Of Global Warming

Reeling under the threat of global warming, an island in India has started to disappear. The tiny island of Ghoramara is at the verge of vanishing due to rising sea levels and soil erosion induced by adverse climatic impact. Part of the Sundarbans delta on the Bay of Bengal, the island has nearly halved in size.

Shrinking In Size & Strength

The world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans is home to endangered tigers, dolphins, and 300 species of birds. But this biodiversity is now in danger and so are the people living on islands. The island’s population has reduced from 7000, a decade ago to 4,800 today. It's now only 1.8 square miles in size - half the area it had 20 years ago.

(c) Reuters

Plight Of Residents

The residents of the island fear losing homes and livelihoods as the flooding worsens every year in the area. Though some of the island's remaining residents would prefer to live elsewhere, they say they can't afford to leave.

"If government gives rehabilitation I will leave," said a resident.

"If a tsunami or a big cyclone hits this island we will be finished," Sanjib Sagar, a village leader, told Reuters.

Global Warming: A Global Warning!

A study by NASA says that increased melting in Greenland and Antarctica is leading to acceleration of global sea level rise in recent decades. It further alarmed that if current trends continue, the world’s seas could have swelled by twice the projected level by 2100.

Almost all nations as well as major coastal cities are now facing the threat of rising seas. While many countries have already upped their game to contribute towards reducing global warming, now it is for individuals to take responsibility to save the planet. It is important to understand that individual contributions are equally vital in protecting the world from the threat that has started to wreak havoc on islands like Ghoramara.

The climate’s worst enemy Carbon dioxide is released when oil, coal, and other fossil fuels are burned for energy—the energy we use to power our homes, cars, and smartphones. By using less of it, we can mark our contribution to climate change.

Ladakh: How I got hit by Acute Mountain sickness(AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness or in short AMS, is like a ghost . You believe it only when you feel it.

Ladakh, is not just another destination where you can leave without prior planning. And no there is no dearth of hotels or travel agents but what you really need to plan is ;How you would "acclimatize".Acclimatize, in simple words means getting accustomed to the high altitude and hence low oxygen. Below are the blunders I did which lead to AMS.

Mistakes I did which resulted in AMS

(Scroll to the bottom to find the short list in case you do not want to read the whole article, but i would love if you did read).

Before starting our journey to Ladakh, we consulted many articles, which all said take Diamox 2-3 days in advance. Not completely trusting the internet. We reached out to local doctors, who very easily deluded us that we would be "just" fine.Big mistake.

We flew directly to Leh. Hence no time to acclimatize on our way up, where you would gradually ascend. If you are flying directly to Leh, recommended acclimatization time is 2 days in Leh (1 day, if you travel via road), before going higher up towards Khardungla Pass (18000 ft), highest motorable pass. Well, this time we listened to the locals of Leh, who said 3-4 hours is enough. One the day we reached, after 5-6 hours of rest, we left for Leh Market and henceforth started my vicious cycle of puking and drinking water. At this point I still thought may be it was just food and lack of sleep. But Meh.

Next day, feeling better, we started our journey to Khadungla Pass. Excitment was at its highest and hence the illness took the backseat. But well, this is AMS we are talking about. And it all came back. I could not breath. Taking baby steps just to reach the board which said Khardungla Pass, felt like climbing a mountain. I was breathless in a minute. Fortunately, this is common at Khardungla Pass and they have a medicare center present. Also, we were carrying oxygen cyclinder. But I refused to take it. And said I am fine.

Do not under estimate that smile

After around 15 mins in Khardungla Pass ,we started for Nubra Valley, which by God's grace is little lower than Khardugla pass , 11000Feet. But that takes time, and hereby started the worst headache ever. Further down after few kilometers, I puked and then took paracetamol. Felt a little better actually.

Nubra was good. And I thought, I have finally conquered AMS. But wait, after a stop of 2 days we started towards Pangong which is mere 15000 feet.

Now Pangong is beautiful. And I was feeling at top of the world. We played around the water, took thousands of pictures and videos and exerted our-self as much as humanly possible (ok may be a little less).

We reached our hotel. Took rest. And by night, head ache came back. I slept(at-least tried) with the headache and next morning, even moving from the bed was difficult. I was again breathless. And again, they have a medicare center right there. We went to the center, the lady doctor told me to take a paracetamol and oxygen. And also adivsed that one should take diamox before coming to such altitudes.Anyways I took paracetamol and oxygen as advised, and yes after around 30 mins I felt better.

We left for Leh afterwards and hence did not had to face the torture again.

So in short, follow the below:

1. Take diamox 2-3 days prior to going to Ladakh.

2. Give time to your body to acclimatize, else it may ruin your trip.

3. Do not try to be brave. If, I had taken oxygen and paracetamol when the head ache started. I might have saved few hours. But, the thing is when you see other people around you, doing just fine. It is hard to admit that you are getting affected. But this is how it is.

Also note, this usually depends on person to person. We were 7 in our group and only 2 were affected. You could be in those 2 or not. So it is always better to be , as we say it; Better safe than sorry".

P.S: Inspite of the AMS, I loved every moment of my trip , ok barring the ones where I had headache. It is a lifetime trip and one should not skip it just because of issues due to high altitude. Just prepare better.

As the winter season is upon us, pictures of snow clad mountains, ski resorts and winter activities are filling up my social feed. However, winter sports like skiing and sledging aren’t just a popular activity abroad. There are plenty of resorts in India which offer this surreal experience with the beauty of the Himalayas surrounding you. One of the best resorts to visit this winter is in the beautiful small town of Auli.

Known as a skiing destination in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand, Auli is known for its clean environment and oak forests. While this town has many skiing resorts which have been developed in the recent years, the Cliff Top Club is one of the best places to be.

Located at an altitude of 10000 ft, the Cliff Top club is an architectural marvel which has been built on an impossible terrain over the years using various engineering techniques. The other famous ranges which are in sight include Dronagiri, Kamet, Trishul, Neelkanth, Mana, and Mukut which are covered in snow all-round the year.

Despite the struggles that the staff face due to its altitude and location, the resort is known for its warm service. With the Gorson Reserve Forest located nearby, the surroundings are also filled with a lot of wildlife and flora and fauna which are a great addition to the picturesque views of the mountains.

Activities

Being located right next to the slopes also gives it an easy access for various adventure sports. The resort organises various mountaineering and rock climbing activities daily. Winters are perfect to get trained in their Ski school with all the necessary equipment available for rent or to go cross country skiing. However, the resort isn’t just a destination for the winters, as a lot of trekkers find the nearby mountain ranges perfect for hiking and nature walks. For adventure enthusiasts, the famous waters of Rishikesh nearby are perfect for river rafting or to go camping. With such a close access to various pilgrimage centres, they also organize daily tours to these places.

One of the most popular packages that they have is a trek to the nearby regions such as Kuari pass, Talli, Tapovan and Joshimath. You can also visit the Valley of Flowers or the famous Badrinath temple depending on the time of your visit. These treks/tours normally take anywhere between 3-7 days depending on the package.

Unforgettable Bali

$

I could not have asked for a more amazing destination for my honeymoon. Bali is the best host. Bali was just a name in the list of honeymoon destinations, before we actually zeroed in on it. And now I am glad we did.

I would share the experience first and will then share some contact details to book a similar trip for yourself.

We had a flight with a layover in Malaysia, and we reached Bali at 12 noon on 21st Nov. We had a driver cum guide waiting with our name at the airport waiting to receive us. One suggestion here, before i forget!! Its better to convert the local currency to US dollars from mumbai itself. You can then get out of the airport quickly after the not so grilling immigration at the Bali airport.

Day 1: Denpasar, Kuta, Bali

Our itinerary was a mix of economy and luxury! So we had a hotel stay for 4 days and the last couple of days in a Villa.

The hotel was not very far from the Airport. The driver took a longer route though, so that we can take a good look at the surrounding area. The clean roads and the very well maintained and decorated sculptures along the road side, was all giving me a very good vibe about the place.

We finally reached the hotel, Swiss-Belexpress in Kuta. We could sense the hot sun once we step outside the air-conditioned car, and we were in no mood to burn our skin the very first day in Bali!! So we decided to take a short nap. It was a leisure evening as there was no planned activity for that day.

We head out of the hotel for a stroll late in the evening. The well lighted up street was amusing. With Bars and pubs all the way. This was the hub for booze, dance and party.

After a couple of hours we inquired about Indian restaurant. We were lucky to find one in the vicinity. Gateway of India, Kuta.

Day 2:

Our driver came at dot 10 am to pick us up. We had a splendid breakfast in our hotel and were ready for the adventure today.

Kintamani & Ubud

Kintamani is a live volcano which is about 2 hours from Kuta. On the way we had a couple of visits planned to see the Fabric making process(Batik) and the village that is famous for its silver ornaments work.

It was not until 1 pm that we reached Kintamani. The road at this place is very narrow, has a deep valley to one side. From this very road we have a clear and amazing view of the mountain top which has the live volcano. The top of the mountain was covered with cloud. We could not see the smoke coming out of the top.

We had a romantic lunch setup with Lakeview Restaurant. The resto has a very lovely setup with tables arranged in a stylish fashion to have a wide view, overlooking the valley and the mountain. The resto has a giant swing, which is a major attraction for adventure lovers.

After spending some quality time here and not less that hundred pictures here, it was time to move on to the next destination.

Tirta Empul temple

We reached the temple premises at around 4pm. The spiritual vibe of the place could be felt even before we stepped foot into the main temple compound. This is a Hindu temple, dedicate to Lord Vishnu. The temple was very crowded with tourists from around the globe and natives alike. We inquired and found that it was an auspicious day in Bali because it was a Full Moon day.

We tied Sarong around our waist and followed all the devotees in to main temple. Though crowded this place offered a calm demeanor. We could see visitors lined up in the pool to sprinkle the holy water on them. It is after the bath one can go into the part of the temple hosting the main deity. So there are some portion of the temple restricted for tourists, mainly because most don't follow proper rituals before entering the temple.

We seeked blessing from Lord Shiva before bidding adieu. The temple compound hosts a big pool with colorful fishes, near the exit. We spent some time here, as it was soothing. We have to walk though the flee market before making our way to the parking area.

Tegenungan Waterfall

It was late in the evening that we reach this tourist attraction. It was already falling dark after the sun set when we reach here and say a spectacular view of the waterfall from a distance. We were sad that we could not go and enjoy the waterfall, but then we were also tired because of the day filled with activities.

We had to settle for a couple of picture of the waterfall. So one advice would be to reach this place a bit early, around 4pm would be perfect. The place is filled with cafes, so you would not be left hungry while enjoying the waterfall.

It was not until 1 pm that we reached Kintamani. The road at this place is very narrow, has a deep valley to one side. From this very road we have a clear and amazing view of the mountain top which has the live volcano. The top of the mountain was covered with cloud. We could not see the smoke coming out of the top.

Day 3:

We had a leisure first half. We could relax in the hotel's swimming pool after a lavish breakfast. We came to know about the famous Ganesha restaurant which is around 3 kilometers from our hotel. This place offers the best indian food that you could find in Bali. Little did we know that, we would end up having dinner everyday in this restaurant!

Tanah Lot Temple

Our driver came to pick us up at 3pm. The ride to temple was a scenic, lust green and eye pleasing.

We reached the temple premise in an hours time. We had to walk for about 20 mins to reach the main entrance. The spectacular view from the main gate could not be put into words. Its mesmerizing. The vast ocean, the temple at the sea shore, the huge waves dashing hard into the big rock monument hosting the temple, everything added up to the experience. We walked down and offered our prayer.

The major attraction here is the sunset. We walked uphill and selected a cafe that had a perfect view. Ordered some drinks and awaited, like thousand others for the setting sun. The changing color of the sky, the clouds hiding the view, the temple growing darker and the water coming even higher blocking the pathway to the temple, we could see all of that from up there.

We then walk back to the parking area and asked our driver to drop us at Ganesha restro for dinner. We reach the restro at 8pm due to the heavy traffic and it had started drizzling a bit as well. We had a splendid 3 course dinner, it felt like finding water in a desert!! We decided to eat atleast one meal here everyday ;)

Day 4:

Day 4 was reserved for water sports activity. It was a different driver today, arranged by the water sports operators. We started for the beach, Tanjung Benoa.

Tanjung Benoa

The water sports was a quick affair. It was fun activity. We inquired and found that the additional activities are highly priced. The Flyboarding seemed very tempting. This is the latest activity in the list of varied water sports

It was afternoon when we finished the activities and freshened up. We saw a restro named Indian Dhaba and decided to eat at this place. The place looked good from outside, but the food was just decent, nothing great. I would not recommend this place!!

We were back in our hotel by 3pm. As there was not planned activites for the day, we had a good sleep and planned to walk out at 6pm to the nearest beach. The Kuta Beach.

Kuta Beach

We walked quite a lot to reach this beach. However I would say its all worth it, this is one of the best beaches I have been to. The setting sun was giving a much needed contrast. The beach is very clean and you could see people enjoying Surfing. We clicked a lot of pics, but believe me the flamboyance of the beach can't be captured, it has to be witnessed.

We decided to relax here and experience the sun set here. It would be a sunset i would not forget in this lifetime. Post that we decide to walk and explore the area, before heading for dinner at Ganesha.

Day 5:

We had our breakfast and checked out of the hotel. It was the day we were being transferred to our villa. Not before a full day of beach visits.

Pandawa and Nusa Dua Beach

After having seen all beaches for the last couple of days, I though there won't be any more beach that would spark an aww. But I was wrong The Nusa dua beach is a marvel. The beach has a big garden and when you reach the shore, it gives an amazing view of the water body, all blue fresh water. The only sound you could hear, is the waves. Its a soothing experience to be here. Haven't it been for the scorching sun, we could have spent an entire day here just watching the sea.

Dreamland Beach

This is a secluded beach, very clean because of the very less number of tourists here. The beach has a posh resort property covering half the beach. Dreamland beach is good to enjoy the calm, joyful surrounding. After some picture here, we decide to head out.

The next destination was the villa, and we could not contain our excitement. We stopped for a quick lunch before heading to the villa, which was an hour away from this place.

Kyriad Villa

The road leading to the villa was scenic beyond words. It was a bit of an outskirts from the hustling city life. When we reached and checked in at the reception, we could sense the luxury all along. The property was a huge luxurious villa, with a private pool. The welcome drinks and fruit plate was served. The hospitality here was really commendable.

Day 6:(Leisure day in the villa)

If you are looking for a romantic hideout, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is a must visit place. A 2 day stay in this villa was worth. The luxury that we experienced here was just amazing. Highly recommended.

So after 2 days stay in the villa, it was our time to say good bye to the wonderful host, Bali. The clean roads, beaches, the luxury, everything added up to make it an unforgettable honeymoon trip.

P.S: 1>When in Bali, be careful with the currency exchange outlets. Just use the authorized center to exchange money.

2> Like Uber, you have BlueBird app in Bali to book cabs.

3> Polish your bargaining skills, you can get things very cheap than the quoted price.

I booked the above trip with Funpoint Holidays(+91 9687182625), www.funpointholidays.com . The agent will help you with hassle-free booking experience. You can get a tailor made itinerary to fit in you budget and still covering all the attraction of the destination.

The next destination was the villa, and we could not contain our excitement. We stopped for a quick lunch before heading to the villa, which was an hour away from this place.

4 Days in Odisha - History, Bhakti, and Beaches

Sri Jagannathpuri is among the famous pilgrimage site for Hindus and temple has an interesting and long history stretching back to Dwapar Yuga. Sri Jagannath Temple procession and Konark Sun Temple are iconic scenes, and that is where we decided to spend our long weekend from 26th Jan to 29th Jan 2018. While Odisha doesn't figure in common tourist circuits in India, this trip was fabulous in many ways and very recommended for 4-5 days gateway.

Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar

Costing

You can follow my best-practice model in planning a trip, though this being a domestic trip was much less hassle. My own planning costed me about 50% of comparable travel package sticker price.

All costs are for family of 2 adults + 2 children, in INR, for 4 days, as of January 2018.

* Return airfare from Bangalore to Bhubaneswar for 4 = 27,600/- = 6,900/- per person

* Taxi to/from home to Bangalore airport = 1,800/-

* Bhubaneswar local sightseeing within day = 1,100/-

* Bhubaneswar to Puri via train/bus = approx. 300/-

* Taxi for Konark round-trip from Puri = 1,200/-

* Taxi for Chilika round-trip from Puri = 1,500/-

* Chilika boating in exclusive boat = 2,000/-

* Hotel in Puri for 4 nights = 2400/- = 600/- per night

* Food and miscellaneous for 4 days = 4,000/- = approx. 500 per day per person

Total cost = 42,000/-

Approx. 14,000/- per adult all-inclusive, or 7,000/- ex-Bhubaneswar, for 4 days.

Bhubaneswar

We landed at Bubaneswar airport at about 10 am, and had planned to spend the day visiting local attractions before taking evening train to Puri. Having considered few options before departing, I booked Ola Rental for 8hr/80km at the airport and went straight to Lingaraja Temple which is largest and very old temple.

We had to leave our luggage in the car, and temple had lockers for wallets/belts/mobile phones. We were bit apprehensive in leaving luggage with unknown driver but after taking vehicle and driver pictures and trusting Ola, we went ahead. Temple looks like any other temple from the outside except visible police presence.

Front entrance to Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar

Inside is altogether a different story! There are not one but hundred small and large temples inside, and one can spend 2-3 hours just wandering about soaking miracle of history, architecture, and bhakti. This place is not to be missed!

Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar

Nearby to Lingaraja Temple are small temples in similar architecture called Mukteswara Temple and Parasuramesvar Temple which also have small lawn around them. We spend an hour there resting and having our packed lunch.

Little far from there - but really Bhubaneswar isn't that big at all - there is famous Raja Rani Mandir, which has entry ticket of 50/- spread out in large grass lawn. By this time it was afternoon and sunny, and this place isn't as good, so you will be fine skipping this. We planned to visit ISKON Temple too as we had heard of good and serene place there but it was closed till 4 pm and we couldn't go in.

ISKON Temple, Bhubanseshwar

In mid-afternoon we visited Khandagiri & Udaygiri Caves which are large rock carved to provide lodging for Jain saints. Caves are good and beautiful place to spend about an hour or two, even as there is not much to see but large area to wander around and take pictures. We also liked narrow road leading to caves much as it had vibrant local market in village fair style selling toys, jewellery, balloons, games, and food items. Caves are under care of Archaeological Survey of India and have nominal entry fee.

Khandagiri Caves, Bhubaneswar

Last stop we covered was Ram Mandir near Bhubaneswar station, which is medium size modern style temple. It's okay to visit but can be easily skipped. By the way, TripAdvisor suggests a famous Ram Mandir as tourist spot but we found multiple such temples in Google Maps and in the end relied on our driver. Not sure if this was the Ram Mandir.

We departed to Puri via passenger train starting 6:40 pm which took about 4 hours to reach by 10:30 pm. We had quick, bad, and expensive dinner at railway station before finding an auto-rickshaw to our hotel Sri Sri Balananda Tirthashram, Sea Beach Road.

Konark Sun Temple

Next morning we went for round-trip to famous temple to Sun God at Konark. You cannot have lived your life without having seen those famous wheels of chariot. Temple is under Archaeological Survey of India with nominal entry and camera fee. There is small market on path leading to temple selling ice cream, food items, souvenirs, pictures, and devotional items. You should plan to spend about 2 hours here, and while we didn't hire tourist guide, we learned that they can be worthwhile for their stories.

Market leading to Konark Sun Temple, Konark

Temple is considered about 1000 years old and you can see parts of it supported by buttresses and harnesses for preservation. There is large garden area surrounding the temple too. There is well maintained toilet also in premises (a surprise!) but not too many lunch options. There were 4-5 restaurants nearby outside but food was worse than terrible (not to mention the service) and it looked like that behind their different facades they shared same kitchen. Most were selling ready meal thali for about 200/- and not a-la-carte options. I would advise you to pack from Puri before coming.

Full view of Konark Sun Temple, Konark (buttress can be seen on both sides)
Panoramic view of Lawn around Konark Sun Temple, Konark

On the way back, you can visit Chandrabhaga Beach - small beach with not much crowd, can swim in - and Ramchandi Temple. Later is best avoided since it's local village temple without anything different. TripAdvisor also informs of Olive Ridley Turtle Reserve on the way back, but we couldn't find exact spot and are told by driver that it's closed now.

That evening we returned back to Puri by about 5 pm, and after quick refreshing at hotel, went inside the Sri Jagannath Temple. You will not find pictures from temples as photography is prohibited. Temple is however large and old and will take 1-3 hours depending on the crowd. There is huge crowd outside too from devotees and vendors and it's festive feeling. There are lots of pandits also who will, for a fee, give you guided tour. I would recommend hiring one, and assuming he does his job well, he will be worth 500-1000/- he charges. Otherwise you will miss many parts of temple. There are stories behind why main deities have Sri Subhadra Devi in middle and not Sri Krishna, what happens before/during/after the famous chariot procession, and size and quantum of food kitchen serves!

One complaint, if I may, is that devotee services are non-existent or badly maintained. For a temple of this size and crowd and donation it receives, there is no toilet, clean water, or benches. Place where prasadam is served is covered in discarded rice and has wet floor, and lighting could have been better. In effect, management has to realize that just because devotees come for God doesn't mean they shouldn't provide basic amenities. Marketing is important, even for pilgrimage site, or else they will lose out new generation of devotees.

Front of Sri Jagannath Puri Temple, Puri

Later that evening we spent lying on the sand on the beach in front of the hotel. Weather and breeze made the experience just perfect.

Golden Beach, Puri

Satpada / Chilika Lake

Third morning, we planned for Chilika Lake which is very large lake famous for it's migratory birds and dolphins. This trip was 2 hour one-way and you are advised to carry water, snacks and food since there is nothing on the way except small shops chips and water bottles. One can hire a dedicated boat for 1720/- (fixed price) which provides 2.5 hr ride which includes dolphin sightings, crab in basket, and fake pearls. I will recommend you skip this experience unless you are very much into bird watching.

Lake is huge, and hence it gets boring just sitting at boat. Lack of wind and hot sun wasn't helping! There are seagulls you can feed for a while. Dolphins are few and far, and since every boat is trying to get glimpse of them, scared and hidden. Often, your boatman will call out and by the time you turn there will be nothing. We managed to catch glimpse only 2-3 times of just skin on the back of dolphins, and nothing of majestic dive they are known for. Your one way boat journey pauses at a island where they show some crabs collected in the basket and try to sell pearls (almost certainly fake). Given heat, boredom, no wind, and no dolphin, you'd rather spend time in Puri visiting few museums or at the beach. There is Alarnath Temple on the way back, but we didn't visit that.

Seagulls at Chilika Lake, Satpada

That evening, we returned about 4 pm to Puri and went straight away to Sri Jagannath Temple to catch the glimpse of flag hoisting. It's a 30 minute feat of acrobatics worth exclaiming over! You can get preview of this at this youtube video. Temple gets crowded around this time and you will have to find suitable spot to stand (sit, if lucky) to see this. While the ceremony is interesting, I wish they would have used larger and brighter colour flag commensurate with the grandiosity of the occasion. Evening was whiled away searching for Sudam Sand museum but we couldn't locate it.

Golden Beach, Puri

There are few other famous temples at Puri namely Gundicha Temple, Mata Matha, Tota Gopinath, and Swarga Dwar but we were done enough with temples and decided to spend first half of day bathing and playing at the beach. Beach is fairly clean, with gentle slope and mild waves which made the experience great. There are no water sports, and you will see locals strolling about. Some photographers may pester you for taking pictures in water (50/- per photo, can bargain) whom you can entertain if you like. You can rent chairs (with umbrella shadows) at the beach for about 50/- per hour.

In afternoon, we took a bus to Bhubaneswar (45/- per person) and flight back to Bangalore in the evening 9 pm. There are few spots on the way from Puri to Bhubaneswar which you can cover if you decide to take the taxi - Raghurajpur (Chandanpur) Art Village, Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa, Pipili art & craft street, and light & sound show at Dhauli (1st show – 6:30 pm to 7:05 pm & 2nd show – 7:15 pm to 7:45 pm). There is train as well at 2:30 pm for travel back.

Miscellaneous Commentary

On Taxis

For Konark and Chilika, we booked SUV but we could've done with a sedan car, and rates for SUV could have been negotiated 200-300/- cheaper since we saw our "agent" pocketing the commission before giving money to driver. There are many tour operators you can bargain with for taxis a day before.

There is a bus also from Bhubaneswar Baramuda bus stand to Balugaon (Satpada) if you plan to spend few days at islands on Chilika Lake which are more popular with migratory birds. Balugaon also has a railway station. Rambha is another town for access to islands for longer stay.

On our 'Hotel' at Puri

Little story behind our hotel. We got recommendation for this dharmshala style simple place to stay which is very close to the Golden beach. After few phone conversations and a Postal Money Order (yes!) for advance payment, we booked a room for four nights. Hotel is very simple with simple rooms (double bed, blankets, towels, table, cupboard) and no other amenities (AC, TV). Room service includes only tea in the morning, and simple restaurant with fixed and same (veg) daily menu, cheaply priced (30/- breakfast with 4 pooris and aloo) and 100/- lunch/dinner. They don't like to be referred to as hotel (will get angry and correct you if you do so) and want to be called aashram, though check-in/out rules are similar to hotel. We had to pay for an extra day since check out is early morning 7 am but we stayed till 9 am!

That said, it was cheap and near Golden beach in Puri. If you want to consider you can call at +91-6752-228727; +91-9439922924 between 08-30 am to 11-00 am exactly 32 days before the check in date. Advance payment for one day's charges needs to done via electronic Money Order (no NEFT, UPI, PayTm, etc.).

On Food

Puri doesn't have lot of fancy restaurants and food isn't why you are there, though you can still find Dominos for example. We really liked the taste of Agarwal's Pure Veg restaurant (take left while coming out of Sri Jagannath Temple, walk about a kilometer) but it's popular and wait time can be an hour long for dinner. Service is swift but basic. We even got them to pack for us on ride to Chilika and return to Bhubaneswar. There many other restaurants on that road.

On Government Tours

There are multiple single or multi-day government tours which are reasonably priced and fairly comfortable which you can join instead of planning your own trip. You can pick package from Panthnivas website or kiosk (near our hotel) or Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) website and book in advance. If planning to book before coming to Puri or Bhubaneswar, you will have to call them as there is no online booking option.

Dandeli - an epitome of adventure - 3 days trip

Being close to nature provides total bliss... travel to discover our trueself..as we must take adventures to find where we truly belong...

We live in a wonderful world and it has lot to offer – Beauty Charm and Adventure. There is no end to adventures that nature offers us, if only we can seek them with open heart and mind. And yes one fine day My companion for life My Husband asked me out loud – Hey!! Let’s go an adventure!! What say? And the very next moment we planned a trip to DANDELI.

We boarded a train from Bangalore city junction to Alnavar junction – RaniChenamma Express. It was an overnight journey. The pre-booked cab have taken us to Magenta resort Dandeli – a home for next 3 days, around 35 kms away from Alnavar.

We were greeted well by resort staff and checked into our lake View cottage. We freshened up took yummy breakfast, and I must admit the food in Magenta resort is delicious enough to appeal to our taste buds.

We started with water activities that were free from Resort like we went for Kayaking, zipline, coracle boat ride, Burma bridge, archery, gun shooting, it was exciting and left us longing for more of adventure.

And then came the real adventure sport, DANDELI is famous for KALI RIVER RAFTING.

We had options –

Rs 500 short rafting through just one rapid, Rs 1350 per head for long duration rafting covering 9.5 kms – 12 to 15 rapids, Rs 1500 for vehicle to reach the starting point of rafting 1500 rs for videos and photos.

I would recommend doing the long duration rafting which we have opted for.

We looked at each other with a spark in eyes and excitement in our heart and then another excited set of words – Oh darling!! Let’s be adventurous and float over the river through the woods.

As we decided and booked the long duration rafting – a thrilling sensation filled us from head to toe. we were a group of five, two other ladies joined us from our resort and one trainer. The boat has capacity of around 10 people.

Our trainer was Mahesh having an experience of 15 years in rafting he told us that he will give commands and we need to act accordingly like “all forward, all backward, get down get back and many more”, he provided us with a knowledge about safety measures.

We both sat front and as we embarked on our journey, the first look of rapid and adrenaline rush went down through our spine, we were totally drenched in seconds, the fun laughter continued and we got along with Kali river so well, the lush green vegetation surrounding the river the chirping of birds the flowing water sound and a setting sun, no view and experience could be more exhilarating.

It took 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the rafting.

We were so thrilled that we didn’t wanted to come out but yes we shouldn’t cry because its over rather smile that it just happened.

Rafting at Kali River

We returned to our resort took coffee and got ready for Bonfire, good music good crowd the warmth of bonfire was fulfilling we danced to our heart’s content and had dinner.

The first day of the trip was in the name of adventure.

Next day we went for open jeep safari at Kali tiger reserve at 4:30 AM in the morning, it was 25 Kms away from our place , tickets were booked at first come first serve basis we got our tickets at 5:30 AM for Rs 450 per head. The jeep had a capacity of 6 people and we started at 6 AM ,it was icy chilling weather , the reserve is famous for Black Panthers Tigers and variety of birds. We could spot Brahminy White Kite, Kingfisher, Deers, Elephants and Sambha Deers, but the weather didn’t disappoint us, we had spent around half an hour at a viewpoint and could hear sweet voices of Indian iora.

View Point during Safari

We went back had breakfast and headed for sightseeing, the first spot was Syntheri rocks, it is located in dense Dandeli wild life sanctuary and we got lucky to spot two wild dogs, first we thought it is wolf or fox but then were corrected by cab driver, the wild dogs don’t looks like stray dogs at all. Syntheri rocks are monolithic granite structure and river Kaneri flows through it,it is eroded by the river and has caves like structure, the river flowing through rocks has small fall kind of texture.

Due to lots of mishaps with people trying swimming there, going to rocks near the water is restricted now. We came down to 200 to 250 steps and then climb back, it was beautiful sight indeed.

Syntheri Rocks

Later we headed for backwaters it is like a picnic spot clicked some good pictures and then headed for Sykespoint.

Backwater

Sykespoint is at a distance of 24 Kms from Dandeli. It offers beautiful views of deep valleys and dense forest covering the hills , a loveliest view of Nagzari River and river Kali confluence. It is famous for beautiful sunset and giant Hornbills. They have Nagzari Power house of Kali project located at bottom of the hills. Karnataka Power Corportaion ltd. operates this power station.

Due to this project photography and video recordings are strictly prohibited. Even getting permissions to visit this place is mostly unlikely. Luckily through our resort manager we managed to get the permission.

We need to have Karnataka Government ID Proof, after all the verification the entry to Sykespoint was granted.

As the weather was clear and sunny we have experienced the best sunset till date together, we got doubly lucky as after the sunset we could hear chirping voice and looked down and spotted a giant Hornbill and then a group of Malabar Pied Hornbill flying.

This was very joyful experience.

We headed for resort enjoyed bonfire and happy meal.

The third day, we got up at 6 am to get ready for nature walk and bird watching activity.

As we went to the balcony of our cottage we could spot a Pond heron and we were smiling at each other and singing “Agaaz ye hai to anjaam hoga haseen”(if the start is beautiful the ends going to be even nicer). We started at 7 am and went inside the jungle and then near to Kali river, we could spot many beautiful birds like: Pond Heron, Egret, Brahminy Kite, Kingfisher, Common Iora, Common Tailorbird, Purple Sunbird, White Cheeked Barbet and few more colorful birds but can’t recall the name.

Kali River

After returning back we got ready for a drive to Yellapur to see Magod and Shirale waterfalls.

Magod waterfalls was lovely, the tourist were few as I think it is not much known to people, it was worth the visit, but yes would have been a better sight in monsoon.

Magod Waterfall

We left for Shirale falls and it was long and tedious trek , the crowd was mostly few local people. The entire round trek was around 8.5 km, full of greenery and adventurous route. This was the last point we covered we couldn’t go to Sathodi falls and Vibhuti falls due to lack of time. We returned to Alnavar junction to catch out train back to Bangalore.

Shirale Waterfall

This trip was happening exciting and thrilling one, loved it to the core.

Srinagar gets its first snowfall of the season and the pictures are mind-blowing !!

If you need an excuse to visit Srinagar, it’s soft, white and falling from the skies right now. Jammu & Kashmir’s capital received the season’s first snowfall during the month of November 2018, a few weeks ahead of schedule. Srinagar typically doesn’t get snow in November—last it happened was nearly 20 years ago. The unseasonable snow meant a bit of chaos and a lot of damage to the apple crop, but it won’t be so bad if it also brings more tourists to the valley. Here’s some photo-motivation to get you along.

Everyone enjoys the first snow. Children try to catch snowflakes in their palms.

If you also wanna enjoy in snow, pack your bags & head straight to Srinagar !!

Varanasi taught me something which the books failed.

I watch the sun rising above the river Ganga, lightning the sky, scattered out of the beam.

I saw newlyweds happily rejoicing the new beginning.

I saw newly born baby crying while the parents performing tradition prayer on the bank of the river Ganga.

I saw kids swimming fiercely in the river.

I saw different age group of people offering prayers to Almighty in different ways.

I saw people washing the clothes while listening to chants.

I saw widow and old age people sitting and chanting mantras near the Ghat.

I saw people mourning over their dead.

I saw fire all over, they cremated their dead.

I saw life cycle in 120 secs.

Varanasi - City of Moksha

Varanasi is the living symbol of the Hindu renaissance, one of the holiest pilgrimages of Hindu religion as well one of the world's ancient city where daily millions of Pilgrims from all over the world pay a visit to the ghats of Ganges either to take a bathe in the sacred river to wash away their sins or to cremate their loved ones. Varanasi's ancient name was Kashi then during Medieval period it change to Banaras and now Varanasi. Basically Varanasi is a combination of two Sanskrit name of the rivers Varuna and Assi where in between these streams the city was built. Here most inevitable cycle of life and death is celebrated everyday. Countless temples around the ghats. The city have most beautiful light views in the night. Varanasi is also favourite place among the writers, photographers, movie makers and spiritual person. To be believed the city was build in 11th century BC making it the world's oldest inhabited city.

I believe in God. The supreme power which control the sky, the mountains, the ocean. He is the Creator, he is the Destroyer. But I am not a strict religious person. I pray daily, chant Mantra's, but I don't follow any kind of religious prayers. Though I am aware of most of religious practice. I believe, God is everywhere. Believe is all about ????

When it comes to visit a Pilgrim place, I always encounter with hundreds of questions in return when I ask the Guide or local person about which Puja they are doing and why. I respect the religious culture they follow but sometimes there are many things which astonished me. Well Mythology is basically a collection of Myths which has been passing from generation to generations and will never stop. It's a good knowledge to learn about it though but to follow is a choice ????

Believe it or not, every year when the monsoon delayed (June month), to please the God of rain - Lord Indra (in Hinduism) a weird custom practiced at Ashwamedh Ghat - The Frog Marriage. Yes! you read it right. The priest performs the rituals of wedding a couple of frogs and then they left into the river. Mythological belief that marrying off wild frogs with Vedic rites helps bring rainfall. This weird tradition also celebrate in Assam Village (North-East India).

Varanasi has 88 Ghats (Ghat is series of steps leading down to a water body, usually a holy river, lake or a pond), which most of the Varanasi Ghat was built in the beginning of 18th century during Maratha Empire. Most of the ghats are associated with legends or mythologies while some ghats are privately owned. They named the Ghats accordingly.

This was my first time visit to Varanasi. Majority people are more interested in take a holy dip in river Ganges to wash away their sins or for sacred wedding rituals. But I was here to explore the ancient culture the city still holds and to witness the Ghat which have never seen darkness - Manikarnika Ghat. The Ghat which is strictly only for cremation. Though there are one more Ghat which is used for cremation - Raja Harish Chandra Ghat. The name of the ghat is derived from the Mythology King Harish Chandra, who spent his life as a keeper of a crematorium. It is believed that for his servings at the ground with devotion and strictly abiding the truth path, Gods rewarded him by restoring his lost throne and his dead son. But as its has been modernized to an electric crematorium as well the ground is smaller so only left Manikarnika Ghat for burning funeral pyres.

I am very fond of movies. Recently I watched Hindi movie "Masaan" (meaning: Crematorium) which was shot at Manikarnika Ghat. The story involves a family which belong to Dom Community (a low-caste of corpe burners) and works in cremation ghat by burning funeral pyres. I also have read about Manikarnika Ghat that the corpse burn here for all days in year. Even when the city floods during monsoon, the rain can't stop the fire. I can't say this was one of my best trip, but as I said in my previous post Varanasi taught me something which the books failed.

Well It was truly amazing experience. Reached early in Varanasi at 5:30am and the day has already started. Local people selling fruit and vegetables on the roadside. Some people were going for sun-rise boat rides. Stayed at Hotel Divine Destination which was appx 600m from Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi's most picturesque spot. The name indicates that Lord Brahma sacrificed (medh) 10 (das) horses (aswa) here, hence the name is Dashashwamedh.

After a quick bath and (heavy) breakfast, set to explore the city. Booked the tour car from the hotel itself. The tour starts at 8:30 am (which was quite late, according to the driver). Started with d arshan at Durga Temple and at the entrance something caught my eye. A notice written "Gentleman not belonging to Hindu religion are requested not to enter the temple", it was quite annoying though, but one cannot really mess at Religious place. Followed by darshan at Tulsi Manas Temple and Sankat Mochan Temple.

After a good 2 hours temple darshan and stucked in traffic jam, we reached Birla Mandir situated within the campus of the "Banaras Hindu University". Besides the religious importance, Varanasi is also a major center of learning and culture. The "Banaras Hindu University" in the city is the largest university in Asia. The property is huge. It was like a mini town. Lovely temple surrounds with lush green garden where students were quietly studying.

Vishvanath Mandir, also known as Birla Mandir (having been built by the Birla Family) is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the tallest in India with its tower being the tallest in the world. Total height of the temple is 77 meters.

At 11:30 pm set to leave for Ramnagar Fort. The 17th Century Fort and Palace on the eastern bank of the river Ganges. It's a house of eccentric museum showcasing collections of Vintage American Cars, Sedan Chairs, Vintage Weapons, Kings and Queens Attires, Old Sari and Vintage Cutlery Collections and unusual Astrological Clock as well the real preserved of hunted animals by the Kings. Sadly the management is never bothered to clean the dust except sweeping and moping the premise. The property is damaged as well.

Took an hour tour of the Fort and without wasting any minute, left for Sarnath. The city is located appx 15 kms from Varanasi. Sarnath is the destination culture of Buddhist Pilgrimage.

To make it easy exploring around, I saved all the places on Google Map.

All the attractions are nearby, you can explore by foot.

Wat Thai also called as The Giant Buddha. India's tallest Budha statue of 80 feet high inaugurated by Thailand Prime Minister as well Thailand's Chief Priest Fra Suthi on 16-Mar-2011. The project took 14 years to complete.

Sarnath Archaeological Museum

The museum have 5 galleries displaying antiques ranging from 3rd century BC to 12th Century AD. Rich collections of sculptures, artifacts comprising numerous about Buddha. One of the finest collections of Buddhist Art exhibit here. The museum is also have collection from Mauryan dynasty. The original sandstone sculpted Lion Capital of Ashoka is as well preserved at this museum.

Note: Carrying any type of bag, mobile phones, camera are prohibited inside the museum. They have locker facility. If you are a history love, it will take around an hour or more to explore the galleries.

This temple is appx 15 mins walking and 5 mins by auto rickshaw. The temple complex is huge. Such a peaceful place it was. If you want to spend some peaceful time, you can spend more time at this Temple.

Sarnath Excavated Site

The excavation sites of Sarnath have amazing collections of sculptures. The most imposing structure is Dhamek Stupa.

Broken piece of Ashoka Pillar built by King Ashoka (Maurya Dynasty) and destroyed by Mughals later are kept at the premise of excavated site. The four lion is kept at the museum.

P.S.: If you are visiting Sarnath, make sure you have time for at-least 5 hrs, as well the cab you have book is willing to wait for long. You will get Ola Cabs as well (INR 100-115), but depend upon their route. Weddings in town make them to switch off the system and work as private cab driver to earn more money. You will get auto-rickshaws as well which will charge more (around INR 200-250). The temple close at 5pm.

It was 7 in the evening, tired, but still I was excited to go to Ghats and explore the life there. After a good meal and quick shower I head to the Ghat. 200m to the ghats, one need to go either by walk or cycle rickshaw or private two-wheeler. It is a VEHICLE FREE ZONE. The entire path was full of shops selling clothes, bags, wedding trousseau as well restaurants and dharamshalas (cheap rate rest house for travelers). Beside the uneven dug up roads, traffic jams, crowd of people walking towards the Ghats, some slippery stairs, path full of people selling flowers, prasad and diya's as well I could hear the sound of drums followed by newly weds on the way to their hotel. But I found solace by being near the river that night. It was around 10pm. Cool, calm nature breeze, some reflecting things about life. The river was calm and boats were parked on banks of the river.

Something caught my eye while I was wandering from one Ghat to another (curiosity never ends!), I saw a group of foreigners as well locals sitting near Naga Baba Sadhu (Naked Holy Man), skin covered in ash, sitting on the ghat along the Ganges. They were on their own, having a great time exploring the Ghats cultures of Sadhu Baba's (Holy men).

In Varanasi, the first ritual Puja is begin in Kashi Vishwanath Temple at 3:00 to 4:00 hrs. They called it Mangala Aarti. As the city is lies on East, the sun rises early at 5:45am. The local people said, rainy days are the worst period here. Water level rises and cover the half of the city which lies on the bank of River Ganges. No ceremony perform at any Ghats that time except cremation.

Next day I woke up early at 4:30am for sunrise boat tour. I was literally half awake but reached at Ghat on time, 5:15am dot. Starting from Priest doing Puja at Dashashwamedh Ghat and people taking holy dip bath in river, performing rituals. I could hear many temple bells with shankh (conch shell)sound. Boat ride start at 5:30am. I saw people doing Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) at Vijayanagaram Ghat. Some people were washing clothes at Babu Pandey Ghat. Many different ghats and ashrams have different stories. But the most fascinating thing was the sun-rise. It was blissful and irreplaceable experience. Saw a boat carrying Buddhist monks and they were chanting mantras.

At 8am, I was back at hotel. After breakfast, I took a power nap. I am not a morning person, but believe to start the day as soon as sun-rise :D. Choose to have lunch Mc'donalds giant burger at JHV Mall. I traveled 7 kms to Cantonment area and realized Varanasi is full of surprise. Neat and clean road. No potholes. No traffic jams. After a lazy afternoon break at mall, I was back to hotel in the evening to get on the boat for Ganga Aarti tour at 6pm at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Though you can see the aarti at the ghat itself, but the crowd will disappoint you. The better view you will get to see by watching it from the boat.

After the aarti ends at the ghat, I took an immense courage to visit Kashi Vishvanath Temple. Sandhya Aarti begins at 7pm to 8:15pm. I said "immense courage" because the temple is situated at narrow alley which is crowded by devotees who doesn't know how to stand in line and no bag, phone, camera, water bottle, etc. allowed to carry inside the temple. You need to deposit it at the safety box. You need to go thru the security check points guarded by the Police. I saw one Police guard mercilessly kick off the beggar who was old and limping. Despite of an ancient temple, the priests won't shame to ask you for baksheesh (a small token amount of money in return of their favor) of not less than INR 500 after he do Puja for you (INR 500 per puja) and not let you even stand around the jyotirlinga for more than 5 secs. If you refuse to give them money, he will curse you. The police security inside the temple literally push people to leave the temple after the aarti finished. I don't believe in curse until I don't do anything wrong, I did enter the temple after the boat tour person asked me he will get me thru the VIP Entry. Even though I was aware the VIP entry means the tour person have tie-up with some Priest (whom he is working for). I left the premise without uttering a single word and without giving any baksheesh. Because the Priest didn't do any puja for me (I request not to do).Instead of giving money to the Priest, I gave beggar food.

One cannot miss to have Banarasi Pan and Banarasi Lassi while in Varanasi. I not a fond of pan, but lassi is one of my favourite drink. It taste amazing! Varanasi is also famous for Banarasi Sari.

After a 2 days non-stop hopping from one place to another, it was the time for bid-farewell. It was a great pleasure learning something new here. Something which I will never forget. A lesson about Life and Death cycle.

"The holiest of the holy sites in the east is Kashi or Banaras as it is known today. Kashi is held as the core of the universe."

A tale of Sun and Sand!

GOOOOOOAAAAA!!!!

What comes to your mind when you hear this??

this is what i think when someone talks about Goa:

"yaaaar papa nahi manege"

"Goa plans are so cursed that even a wedding is planned here its ought to be cancelled "

These were my thoughts before visiting this place but then i saw its beauty!! This place is a wonder and every time you visit you get a whole new experience.

This is a place where you will experience a mini 'Las Vegas', a 'Miami', a small 'amazon' and much more.

The best thing is that your experience totally depends on the people you travel with. (At least i experienced this :p).

If you are travelling with family you are ought to spend most of the time in beautiful and historic churches, forts, the bird sanctuary, seeing some great architecture by the Portuguese and the beautiful markets. Families also like to take a total tour package of Goa which include site seeing and fun activities here!

Now if you are travelling with friends/cousins (aahh! living the dream of every Indian youngster XD.) you are here probably here for relaxing, partaaaaayyyyyying, trying everything you cannot in your own place!!!! and Goa has it all!

Calamari Bathe and Beach !! good food, good ambience!

One can visit the relaxing beaches with shacks (Baga & Arambol),Tito's lane near Baga is a good place to visit for party seekers. Here you can have a good time with beer and dance. you can visit the gigantic Casino ships in Panji especially on saturday nights(pre booking is helpful). Also alcoholic beverages are cheaper here (carrying them outside state is illegal and can get one in big trouble).

People seeking adventure also have a great scope here with activities like paragliding, parasailing, water sports,Scuba diving, fishing and much more.

BEST TIME TO VISIT : Between November to March.

STAY : stay options are enormous from luxury 5 star villas to cheap home stays.

(Rs.500------Rs.20000). Again please pre book!

WHERE TO EAT : food is absolutely not a problem in Goa. Mostly all types of cuisine are available here. personally loved hotel - DE BAGA DECK -try the butter chicken here! Hotel NAVTARA for vegetarian food is best and has multiple branches all over Goa.

HOW TO REACH GOA : Good road connectivity, has an airport ,railway is also a good option

ALSO if coming by private vehicle note that petrol pumps are limited so keep tanks full. one can rent almost any type of vehicle on daily rental basis (please carry license).

concluding that trips to Goa are never boring. visit with your family, your friends ,hell yeah anyone and have an experience that will only crave to visit this place again and again and again and again.............

Just cant get enough!
Snow clad Himalayas in Gulaba Valley

Day 1 - Road Trip starts...

After our hectic day at office, we left Delhi at 5:30 pm. The thrill of travelling for the next 16 hours was something to look forward to.

Note: Avoid night travel unless you are hard bound on time. The time we chose was December when fog had just started and it becomes difficult to drive at night in hilly areas.

Day 2 - Reached Manali - Gulaba Valley

Do not miss the delicious Amrik Sukhdev Paratha on Murthal. Give your calorie count a break and cherish the butter!

The snow had just started and locals advised us to go to Gulaba valley to see it. Although we recommend you can skip this part and directly move to Kasol if you want a relaxed trip!

Note: The roads are not good in some parts of the highway.

Day 2- Kasol Valley

We reached Kasol at 8pm at night and indeed it was a hectic trip. We checked in a guest house right after entering Kasol, but it would have been better to explore more. I am more of a cleanliness freak and do understand that places like Kasol will not have too good facilities, but basic hygiene is utmost necessary. We recommend Hotel Panchtara which is located in the main market and has very good rooms with very clean bathrooms. We got a room at 1000Rs per night which was worth. The restaurant is very cosy and has its own fireplace with nice collections of books. The food is also good.

Note: Take room on 1st floor or higher to enjoy the scenic view of snow clad mountains.

Day 3 - Kasol and Chalal Valley

Right after our good night sleep, the next morning we explored Chalal valley which is around 10 min mini trek from Kasol. Yet again a very beautiful and scenic place. There are view eating joints just by the river where you can get good food and a little hippi atmosphere.

Tibetan Flags at Chalal
Sky touching trees at Chalal
just sit and relax...

Note: Do try chocolate brownies and croissants in the small bakeries in Kasol Market. Also, have thupka and lemon honey ginger at the local restaurants which keeps us warm.

Day 4 - Manikaran Gurudwara and Back to Delhi

After having a nice Thupka breakfast with chicken sausages, we proceeded to Manikaran Gurudwara. Definitely one should not miss this divine place and witness the nature's miracles of hot water stream. It gives the devotee a perfect solace amidst the chilly cold weather. We left for Delhi by 3pm as we had a flight to catch. One can check flights from Chandigarh as well to save time and enjoy more time in Kasol.

Day 5- Trip Ends at New Delhi

Note: Make sure you carry enough water and snacks for the road trip. There are places to stop by but it is better to not to stop in order to save time.

Munnar - Queen of hill station of south india...

The first stretch of our journey was from Bangalore to Salem. This is a fairly good stretch with toll roads and good restaurants on the way. We stopped a few times to have tea or snacks on the way. One fine place I remember is the RFC ( an Indian version of KFC) just after Hosur. The ride was smooth in my friend's Scorpio. To top that it was a full moon night and the golden rays of the moon lit up the whole way. It was indeed a sight to watch.

On reaching Salem we were already too late for dinner. We decided to have a bite at Park Plaza. This place remains open all night and some food is always available. After spending an hour or so at the Park Plaza we headed towards the hotel that was booked. My friend had booked the "Hotel Silver Palace". This was a pretty decent hotel and the fare was not too steep.

That night we were already too tired after a long day at office and a long ride to Salem. We called it a day and went to sleep.

DAY 2

The next day we woke up early. We didn't want to get caught in the early morning traffic of Salem and Munnar was a good 300 kms away. We started off on the way towards Erode and soon we reached a Saravana Bhavan on the way where we decided to stop for breakfast. This is a nice place with shops , ATMs ,restrooms etc and a very decent breakfast. We were not sure where we are going to have our next meal and so we stuffed ourselves with Masala Dosas and Vada and coffee.

Thereafter from Erode we continued on the National Highway 47. The areas near Bhavani seemed very nice , but we decided to step up and leave that for another trip. The highway continued for several kilometres till we reached a major junction where we took a turn towards State Highway 166. This road is also mentioned as the Avinashi Mangalam Pollachi Road. This is where the fun began.

We stopped at a shop to get some provisions for ourselves. Entering a State Highway is like an eent that we must be prepared for. And we soon discovered that there is a railway crossing where a flyover construction is underway- except that there is no way to cross to the other side. After following a truck driver's formula ( go where ever others are going) we figured out there is an alternative mud road to cross over to the other side. Fortunately we were in a Scorpio and we managed to cross along with the trucks. Its difficult to cross in a sedan or hatchback at this place.

The rest of the State Highway was just an opposite experience. It was a wonderful stretch of road, although narrow but very scenic with green fields and maountains far away. And then we saw the windmills. It was simply too awesome to capture on a camera. The vastness of the fields with the windmills far and far away, light music and green fields - well we were near to heaven.

We crisscrossed a few other State Highways and finally reached Udumalapettai. No wonder State Highways throw up some of the most beautiful scenes of the countryside and I would certainly take a SH route whenever I can.

Udumalaipettai was a busy town, we could feel the heat of summer and with several diversions due to many constructions it was pretty terrible.

The route from Udumalaipettai to Marayoor is a busy road again. Although not as much as the highway it seemed that holiday season has set in and lots of people are heading for Munnar

Enter Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

There is an entry check point at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Someone was collecting Rs 20 from all drivers and without understanding why we also paid up and then realized later it was not a regular ticket, just a tip or you can guess what. There was really no need for that. The first thing that we noticed on entering Chinnar was the big tamarind trees with ripe tamarinds. After resisting the temptation to grap a bunch my friends finally decided to move on. I am not very fond of raw tamarind so I was not that interested.

Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary is barren and arid with thorny bushes and very little green vegetation. One can easily make out that this is the rain shadow part of the ghat section. Although there is a beauty of the vast expanse , it is really not a place to visit during summer for normal tourists.

However soon afterwards further west is the Eravikulum national park and this place is green. The difference is especially visible coming from the Chinnar side. There is a sudden splurge of green and violet on the roads entering Munnar. The riot of colors set up our spirits. Then we crossed a path full of sandalwood trees. The first sight on entering Munnar is the vast expanse of the tea estates. The route from Marayoor takes one through the famous Kanan Devan tea estates. Its all a stretch of greenery as if flattened by a huge cutting tool. Its bewildering initially and then it becomes a common sight in and around Munnar.

DAY 3

My friend woke me up at 5:30 am. We had planned to go on a random hike. I am beginning to enjoy these leisurely random hikes to unknown places. Quickly I got fresh and we set off with the camera. We walked aimlessley till a point we found an entry to a forest. We saw vehicle tracks and a long mud road. Deciding to follow the mud road very soon we reached a place that was simply too amazing to describe. Huge trees and dark bushes outlined the path and the early rays of the sun was just peeping through the rows of trees. And not a single soul in sight.

After a great breakfast we set off for a bit of sightseeing.

We started off on the Munnar Top Station Highway. We saw the Matupetty Dam on the way. Then we reached Echo Point. We stoped here for a while and enjoyed the beauty of the lake. This place makes echoes , but then its so crowded that its pretty difficult to get a serene feeling. One should probably go there only on a very rainy day with no one around.

With hundreds of shops selling everything from caps to pakodas and fried cashews and different kinds of mementos. After a long walk around the lake it was time to go.

Returning to the base point of Top Station and after a round of snacks we called it a day and started on our return to the resort. On reaching Munnar town we bought some chicken and the resort guys promised to arrange a bonfire. That they arranged pretty well and with a wonderful rainy weather it was a bumper evening.

The lunch was weak but the dinner was fantastic. The day ended and we wrapped up for our last night in Munnar.

DAY 4

We started the day late. After checkout from the resort we decided to accept the offer of the resort boys to check out the Spice Garden. That was indeed something that was wonderful. We also bought some local wild honey.

Then we all wanted to go to a elephant camp near Matupett dam. Soon we reached there and bought the required tickets. This was again a heavily crowded place. We enjoyed the sight of the elephants till it was our turn to ride them. I am awed by these majestic creatures each and every time I see them. The ride was very short compared to the price of the ticket. But I thought its okay , at least the elephant should get a good meal. That I guess it did with hundreds of pineapples vanishing just like that. While on the short ride the elephant stopped for a while while the mahout pulled out a few hairs from its tail. Seemed like a couple behind us were getting into a hairy deal for elephant tail hair.

Towards late afternoon we crossed over to the Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary. This seemed much enjoyable now that the evening sun was setting. After numerous stops we saw a couple of tuskers far away on the open field. But the best part was when we were just about to exit from the park. An Indian Gaur or popularly called a bison crossed the road in a hurry. It was too quick to capture it on a camera. But that made my day

While returning we decided to skip the State Highway since it didn't have any shops and had a few road diversions. Instead we decided to go via Coimbatore. This was a verybusy National Highway and it took several hours just to cross Coimbatore.

Around 10 at night after we stopped at a local Dhaba for some dinner we decided to skip the night journey and stay at a hotel. Our decision was influenced by the strange diversions of the National Highway under construction.

Buses and trucks came from both sides and without road markings we thought it can be pretty fatal at night. Good that we took the decision.

Next day we started very early and after a series of stops reached Bangalore by afternoon.
